NASA's Planetary Science Division: An Exclusive Opportunity for Program Scientists (2026)

NASA's Planetary Science Division is seeking a Program Scientist to join their team at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC. This is an exciting opportunity for a planetary science expert to contribute to the exploration of our solar system and enhance our understanding of planets. The role offers a unique chance to gain insight into planetary science policy, understand the proposal review process, and lead scientific programs with a positive impact on the community.

The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of post-Ph.D. experience and a strong collaborative spirit. They should be adaptable, able to manage multiple programs, and foster productive relationships with colleagues, the planetary science community, and the public. Disciplinary expertise in planetary science is essential, but the ability to contextualize this knowledge within the broader field is crucial for the success of the division's programs.

NASA is offering a two-year initial appointment with the possibility of reappointment for up to six years. The Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) provides for temporary assignments between the federal government and eligible non-federal entities. However, not all employees of non-federal entities are eligible for the IPA program. The eligibility criteria include occupying a career position and having been with the entity for at least 90 days. Federal, state, or local government employees serving under temporary appointments and elected officials are not eligible.

One of the key aspects of the role is managing potential conflicts of interest. Program Scientists must consider the interests of their home institutions and ensure their participation does not compromise NASA's objectives. They are not allowed to communicate on NASA's behalf with their home institutions or represent third parties to NASA or other federal agencies. This role requires a careful balance between personal and professional commitments.

NASA is looking for a passionate and experienced scientist to join their team. The deadline for applications is May 15, 2026, and interested candidates should submit a curriculum vitae and cover letter as a single PDF file to the Director of Planetary Research. This is a rare opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking planetary science research and make a significant impact on the field.
